Paritutu is the remnant lava plug from an ancient volcano, dating back around 1.7 million years. The rest of the ancient crater rim is a ring of off-shore islands, named the Sugar Loaf Islands by Captain Cook in 1770 which form the western boundary of Port Taranaki. At the foot of Paritutu is a moth-balled coal/oil/gas fired power station.

It's a stiff climb to the top of Paritutu, but very achieveable by families, especially since the track was upgraded and permanently stepped through the steepest most treacherous bits, April-May 2010.

At the top is the trig, and the reward of supurb views up and down the Taranaki coast, south to the mountain, and across the city of New Plymouth towards the central North Island mountains of the Central Plateau.
State/Territory: North Island NZ
