Built on the north-east corner of the Igreja this clock tower has two huge faces, one facing east and the other facing south. They are both huge, some 2.5m in diameter and as the Igreja is on top of Tavira Hill they can be seen from all over the town.
Although the clock tower belongs to a 'primitive construction', it would seem implausible that the tower wholly survived the 1755 earthquake when the rest of the church was destroyed. When the church was rebuilt, it was sanctified in 1800, it would be the next thing in line to rebuild/restore the tower which would just about agree with the date of 1809 to be seen on the east face of the tower. Either that or the 1809 is the date of the 'later decorative additions' perhaps the roof, scroll work, and coat-of-arms on the east side.
There are at least two bells in the tower, one to strike the quarters, the other to strike the hours. They can be seen above the faces in small alcoves, the hour bell being on the east side.
