John Cazale's grave is located in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, Massachusetts. His unique, but unassuming headstone carries the names of members of both the Cazale and White families who are buried nearby.

John Cazale (1935 - 1978) was a well known actor who appeared in numerous stage productions throughout his short but accomplished career. But he is best known for his performances in the five films in which he appeared during a six year period leading up to his death in 1978: The Godfather, The Godfather II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. Each of those films was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture (Cazale also appeared posthumously in The Godfather III through the use of archive footage).
In The Godfather II, Cazale (appearing as Fredo Corleone) was the target of his brother Don Michael Corleone's (Al Pacino) rage and anguish in the famous scene in which Michael says: "I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!".
Cazale's superb and emotional portrayal of weak, brooding characters set him apart from most other actors. He is also widely considered to have drawn better performances from those around him as the result of his intensity, focus, and pleasant personality.
Cazale died of cancer at the age of 42, at the peak of his film career. His final performance was in The Deer Hunter (in which he played Stan). He was engaged to actress Meryl Streep at the time, but died before the film was released.
A 2009 film titled '"I Knew It Was You” - A tribute to John Cazale' documents Cazale's life, and includes a number of emotional interviews by some of the performers who knew him best.
