John Gillham along with his six brothers, his father and 2 brother-in-laws all served in the Revolutionary War. John was born January 4th, 1756 in Virginia. He moved to South Carolina in 1763. He enlisted March 23, 1776 as a corporal in the 6th South Carolina Regiment. He served as a lieutenant in the militia under Colonel Brandon. He moved to Madison county, Illinois in June 1802.
