The Plaque Reads:-
Maraetai Mission Station
The Church Missionary Society's Maraeti Mission Station was founded near here in July 1837 by lay catechist William John Fairburn. The missionaries taught reading, writing, agriculture and domestic skills to local Maori. The station closed in 1843.
