It all began in 1946, over lunch. Tom Darlington wanted to create a town from scratch. Kenyon Turner Palmer agreed. Nine years later, the town of Carefree, Arizona began. KT Palmer got the idea of a large attraction to draw attention to his community and enlisted the help of an architectural firm to build the Carefree Sundial.
In 1976, the Kiwanis acquired the sundial property and gave it to the town. They maintain it as well. They placed a smaller sundial at its base along with a plaque dedicated to the memory of one of their own, Kenyon Turner Palmer.
The plaque reads:

This sundial property was acquired in 1976 and is maintained by the Kiwanis Club of Carefree. It is dedicated to the memory of a fellow member.
Kenyon Turner Palmer
1899-1976
as a co-founder of Carefree. In 1958 he climaxed a life of distinguished service to the state of Arizona and fulfilled his vision of a community dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the desert foothills - the land he loved.
