One of the oldest Freemason Lodges under the English Constitution in New Zealand, Lodge Tongariro no. 715, consecrated in 1857, used to meet in the Rutland Hotel, Wanganui.
In 1883 new purpose-built lodge rooms were built around the corner in Bell Street. As is usual in building a new Masonic lodge building, a foundation stone is laid in the North East corner of the building.
This stone shows the year the foundation pile was laid in the year of Masonry 5883 (Anno Lucis, Masonic year of light).
The building is now a private house, but the foundation stone remains, and is visible from the street.
Year of construction: 1883
 Full inscription: 5883
