Originally erected to commemorate the dead of the Great War from the City of Tavira, the memorial is also commemorating all who died in the service of their country in the fifty years of war between 1918 and 1968.
The monument consists of a four-sided obelisk with a flame at the top. It is set upon a three step plinth. Each face of the obelisk has a bronze sword set into it. There are some native plants and grass planted around the monument, the whole surrounded by a low metal barrier.
This circular compound is set into a mosaic showing a stylised sword, which with the nearby amphitheatre, public fountain and city hall all form the 'centre' of the city.
The original inscriptions are metal set into the marble plinths, whilst the addition is a cast bronze plate riveted on.
The north face gives the dates: 1914 - 1918
The east face has two inscriptions, the upper being:
AOS MORTOS DA GRANDE GUERRA A CIDADE DE TAVIRA and is surmounted by the Portuguese Coat of Arms.
The lower, bronze plate reads:
AOS COMBATENTES MORTOS PELA PÁTRIA
HOMENAGEN DOS COMBATENTES DA GRANDE GUERRA
XI-1918 XI-1968
The south face has just two words:
FRANCA
AFRICA
The west face carries the Coat-of-Arms of Tavira.
