There are two public clocks in Buntingford. The oldest is a rare one-handed town "turret" clock which dates back to the early 1600s, although the buildings which support it are part of a charitable bequest of 1558 by Henry Skinner.
The Clock was reconstructed about 1749, in which year the bell was cast by Robert Catlin. The bell was used to call the people to the town to worship on Sunday mornings and rung to celebrate joyous occasions such as marriages and to mark sad ones such as funerals.
The tower and mechanism have been renovated and an electric winder now takes the place of the weights, which formerly had to be wound up daily. These weights actually hung down into the archway.
