Grassy Ridge, a 6,160 feet summit, is the highest peak near the AT with a natural 360 degree view. On clear days views include the Black Mountains in North Carolina to Smokies in Tennessee. The open grassed bald is also dotted with purple clusters of Catawba rhododendron from May to July.
Access route. Start at Carvers Gap. Head northbound on the Appalachian Trail for 1.9 miles. At the split (Waymark WM8ZM1) take the half mile spur trail to the summit. You're in the right area if you see a plaque dedicated to Cornelius Rex Peake who owned and donated much of the mountain, but head northwest a short distance to reach the actual high point.
The Grassy Ridge summit is a recognized peak of the South Beyond 6000 challenge sponsored by the Carolina Mountain and Tennessee Eastman hiking clubs. Further information can be found here .
