At the foot of Pioneer Road stands the obelisk marking the spot below which the first European settlers of "new" Plymouth came ashore on 31 March 1841 from the barque "William Bryan".
The Plymouth Company, an offshoot of E. G. Wakefield's New Zealand Company, was formed in 1840 to provide a settlement for emigrants from Devon and Cornwall. The site for the town was selected by surveyor Frederick A, Carrington, who arrived from Wellington aboard the "Brougham" in February 1841.
Only those on the first two company vessels landed here. later arrivals anchored off the mouth of the Huatoki Stream in central New Plymouth and the passengers were lighted ashore.
The unveiling of the monument on 31 March 1911, was attended by 43 of the original immigrants. (Note the incorrect spelling of the "Timandra" and the wrong date of arrival for the "Blenheim".)
Pioneer Park is currently the western end of New Plymouth's coastal walkway.
