Marker Text: Nicholas Paul Smith’s hardware store was a welcome sight in Bend because up until then supplies had to be brought in from Shaniko by stagecoach. Quick to spot a trend, Smith was the first to sell gasoline to the increasing number of automobile owners. Patch marks on the sidewalk pavement mark the spot where smith installed the first gas pumps in Bend.
N.P. Smith Pioneer Hardware is still the oldest wooden building left standing in downtown Bend.
