James S. McDonnell was an aviation pioneer and founder of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation which later became McDonnell Douglas.

James McDonnell was a former Army Air Corps pilot and later an engineer, who opened a small aircraft factory in St. Louis in 1939. The McDonnell Aircraft Corporation turned out to be one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial jet lines, military aircraft, spacecraft and missiles. Mr. McDonnell created and financed research programs in science and medicine at Washington University, where he once served as chairman of the board of trustees. He and the McDonnell Foundation donated more than $28 million to the University before his death. The McDonnell Corporation eventually merged with the Douglas Aircraft Company to form the aircraft giant, McDonnell-Douglas. Today, McDonnell-Douglas is part of the Boeing Company it continues to produce many of the world finest aircrafts. James McDonnell died on August 22, 1980 and is buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

James McDonnell was born on April 9, 1899 who graduated from Princeton University and earned a Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT. After graduating from MIT, McDonnell worked for Huff Daland Airplane Company and the Glenn Martin Company. In 1938, he resigned from the Glenn Martin Company and founded McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in 1939. The McDonnell Corporation was headquartered in St. Louis and quickly became the principal supplier of fighter aircraft for the United States Air Force and the United States Navy. Many of the company’s aircraft were named Phantom, Demon and Goblin. In 1967 the McDonnell Aircraft Company merged with the Douglas Aircraft Company for form the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation. In 1997, McDonnell-Douglas merged with the Boeing Corporation and continues to produce such military aircraft as the F-15 Eagle, and the F/A 18 Hornet. James McDonnell died on August 22, 1980 and is buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
