The New Library of Alexandria, the New Bibliotheca Alexandrina is dedicated to recapture the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It is much more than a library.

After a commission decided to recreate the old Library everything was thought. Even the place is near where the ancient one was supposed to be. This idea was soon enthusiastically adopted by other individuals and agencies, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, UNESCO are among them.
The concept of endowing the country with a cultural and scientific center of excellence made UNESCO organize an architectural competition (1988) won by Snøhetta a Norwegian office among 1400 entries.
Construction work began in 1995, and USD $200 million spent the complex was officially inaugurated on October, 16 2002.
