"The Springfield "Maid Rite" Shop is significant for several reasons:
1. It is an early example of the distinctively American roadside drive-in/walk-up restaurant that began to spring up in the 1920s, as urban America became increasingly prosperous and mobile.
2. The shop exemplifies the earliest phase of today's fast~food, trademark architecture and set the stage for the "catchy name" mass marketing strategies now used by McDonalds, Burger King, etc.
3. Built in 1926, it is the oldest store in the 150 unit ~Maid-Rite chain in continuous operation at its original site, and probably the oldest sandwich shop in continuous operation in Springfield, Illinois.
4. The shop has served as a favorite gathering spot for several generations of Springfield High School students, who make nostalgic trips back to the store during holiday seasons." - National Register Nomination form
