At the end of the main street, Beacon Avenue, in Sidney BC is the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. It occupies the north section of the ground floor of the Pier Hotel and Condo on the shore. This is a great place for the whole family to explore the marvels of our local ocean, the Salish Sea. The centre is quite similar to the larger and more famous aquarium at Monterey Bay CA but lacking the sea otters.
There is an open display outside the building so those walking past on the walkway can see some of the things displayed inside. Whale watching tours are available across the street. I have seen orcas and grey whales from the walkway.
Enter through the simulated airlock to start the underwater experience in manner similar to Disney's Epcot Center displays. You come out to see walls of water with an amazing variety of sea creatures: schools of fish, drifting jellyfish, marine plants. Later you can enjoy a hands on experience touching sea stars, anemones etc.
The major sponsor is Shaw Communications, the major cable TV and internet supplier in western Canada. The developer of the Pier Hotel was required to provide the space for the Ocean Discovery Centre as he was acquiring public park land and eliminating the old Sidney Museum.
