An old concrete shelter stands alone in a grassy reserve surrounded by bushland. It stands on a hilltop, out in the country, isolated and lonely, at the historic site of the old Waikato Sanatorium.

In 1902 this land was purchased by the Health Department and became the site of the Te Waikato Sanatorium. The patients were housed in these small concrete shelters, with one or two beds, a door and three sides were windows. The Sanatorium was demolished in 1922. This is the only remaining shelter, a cold and lonely place to be. It stands on the hilltop that is now a scenic Reserve, a stark reminder of all the lost souls who stayed here.
There is air of melancholy and loneliness about this place, it must have been a sad place to have to stay in.
