On the corner of Townsend and Bancrosft in Pepperell Massachusetts stands this marker. It stands about four feet tall and is made of stone. The stone is rough, except for the front, which is smooth and polished. The polished front reads:
"After the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777, certain British
officers, prisoners of war, quartered in this vicinity but released
upon parole, were permitted to enjoy, in all their miletary finery, a
"trysting place" at this spot."
A tryst is an agreement to meet at a certain location. British officers were allowed to enjoy their military rank's benefits upon the agreement that they meet together at this location, much like parole.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
