"Roman Cutillas was a 49-year old Filipino man with a wife and four children living in the Philippines. He was in the temporary foreign worker program, and had been working here to support his family. In order to save extra money for his family he rode his bike. He had just sent $200 to his family and was riding home on April 20. He was struck by a pickup truck and died of his injuries".
The note above is from the Westmount Community League newsletter. They organized a pot luck supper to raise money to send his remains home and to help his family, his wife and four children ranging from 8 to 18. Together with his previous employers and the Phillipino community, they raised over $13,000.
I lived on 126 St from 1981 to 1988 and generally rode my bike to work downtown. Even then there were safe bike lanes and areas of high traffic hazard. I was cut off by many trucks and often insulted by taunts like "Look! a man in a suit on a bicycle".
