Mining was, and remains a dangerous occupation. Rockfalls, gas, dust, moving machinery etc all place risk on life, and particularly so in underground mines. With over 700 lives lost over the years, there would be few of the older Broken Hill families untouched by these sorts of events.
The Miners Memorial occupies a prominent position overlooking Broken Hill. (
visit link) gives a very good outline of the memorial and the associated Vistor's Centre. Note that this website mentions more than 800 deaths instead of 700 as noted in the Broken Hill Council's website.
The attached gallery includes a sample of the memorial wall which shows the names of those who have perished in the mines together with their age, the company they worked for and the cause of death.
Some distance from the Memorial, but within the precinct are a number of mining machine relics. Down the road a little are two skips with plaques (Waymark WM8VY4) commemorating two miners whose remains are still underground.
