The 61-bell Christopher Columbus Carillon was installed near the main entrance to Governors State University in 1992 as part of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.
A large bronze plaque of Columbus and his ships, along with plaques with the names of donors and committee members, are installed around the perimeter of the carillon.
