Founded by a limited partnership, Companhia de Lanificios Chemina was due to the initiative of the brothers José Joaquim dos Santos and Salomão Santos Guerra, after managers of the establishment. With draft Juvêncio José da Silva - who also designed the Town Hall - began building in April 1889 on grounds of the old couple's fifth or chimney, where he adopted the name. In 1994, on the verge of closing permanently, occupying only part of buildings, employs only 15-20 workers. The buildings are now municipal property. In 2000 the main building suffered a devastating fire.
