Charles Haines left Cheltenham, England in 1816. After travelling from New York to Toronto, he worked the Credit River building mills. He and his sons carved their way through the forest following the blazes of the survey party and established the village of Cheltenham in 1821. Cheltenham flourished as a mill town untill the 1800's and today hosts numerous recognized historic sites.
