This coffin lid or tomb top dates to the medieval period. It would probably have lain as a floor slab and has a cross, sword and shield engraved on it. Three escallops are engraved on the shield and flowers and shields also appear beneath the lid. There is a moulded edge and it is about 10 inches thick. The heraldry points to the fact that it is most likely a memorial to the Salfords.
