Reserva Natural das Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha occupies a strip of 16 km along the sea shore between Santiago do Cacém and Sines and has been classified as a natural reservation and protected area since August 2000.
Poço dos Caniços is one of the many areas that were once part of the bigger lagoon and that now host, nest and feed a few unique bird species. Some of these are the Netta rufina, Ardea purpurea and the Fulica atra.
