The National Ocean Service (NOS), the United States Census Bureau and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) co-sponsored a project to mark the 2000 Census Center of Population for every state in the United States of America. A lot of states have set commemorative markers to mark their center of population. The United States Census Bureau provided the location of the state population centers and the NOS provided the guidelines for placement of the marker. The ACSM coordinates the monument setting and observation performed by state professional surveyors.
This monument marks the 2000 Census State Center of Population for the state of
New Hampshire. It was dedicated on November 21 in 2003. The mark is located at the Pembroke Town Library in
Pembroke, New Hampshire. A disk was set into the top of 1x1 foot granite stone. You'll find the monument in the front lawn of the Pembroke Town Library. The mark was found in a good condition, it shows a datum point in the middle with the town name
PEMBROKE surrounded by the contour of the state of New Hampshire. The monument also shows three logos of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, the National Geodetic Survey and the New Hampshire Land Surveyors Association and the text
2000 New Hampshire and
Population Center. Until now the monument has
not been accepted into the NGS database.
More about the Center of Population Project can be found on the
National Geodetic Survey website. Another excellent website is
Holoscenes.com. It gives also very good information for mostly every state and their Center of Population monument like PID, Designation and Position.
Enjoy your survey.
