"One of the most important habitat components for snakes is the hibernaculum (or den). Year after year, hundreds and sometimes thousands of snakes migrate to a hibernaculum to spend the winter.
The red-sided garter snake Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis
is one of three garter snake species that occur in Alberta. The red-sided garter snake is the most widely distributed reptile in North America, and its range extends further north than any other species."

This particular hibernacula is watched over closely by the children of Fort Assiniboine School.
