In 1034, the Chateau de Foix became capital of the County of Foix and played a decisive role in mediaeval military history. For the next two centruies, it was the home to the Counts de Foix who led the Occitan resistance during the crusade against the Albigensians. The county became a privileged refuge for persecuted Cathars.

The castle was beseiged by Simon de Montfort in 1211 and 1212 but resisted the assault, unlike Bézier and Carcassonne where thousands were massacred.

The castle is now a regional museum and admitance was free.
