Kootenae House was built in 1807 by Jaco Findlay and David Thompson as a fur trading outpost of the North West Company. Jaco Findlay blazed a trail from Rocky Mountain house over the Howse Pass to the Columbia River. They built Kootenae House down from Lake Windermere as a base to explore and survey the rest of the Columbia Basin. Thompson established a series of forts along the Columbia and reached the mouth at Astoria Oregon in 1811.

Archeological work has established the location as published. The post was abandoned in 1812. Kootenae House was named a national Histroic site in 2004.

The site itself consists of an information kiosk and a plaque. There are no services on site; limited parking is available.
