This area was settled primarily by Swedish immigrants in the late 1860's. This church first met in the settler's homes in 1871 when Rev. Charnquist came to Austin. The congregation was then formed in 1873.
The first sanctuary was built by the congregation and dedicated in 1879. A public school was then built in 1882 and the parsonage, which still stands, was built in 1884. The current sanctuary was built in 1901-02 with an addition built in 1867.
The pipe organ currently used by the church was installed in 1912.
The adjoining cemetery, which is still in use, has approximately 230 graves with the earliest being dated 1885.
