The Gilbert Historical Society was organized early in the 1960 and became incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1979. Shortly after being incorporated, the Gilbert Historical Society gained ownership of the building formally used as Gilbert's elementary school thanks to contributions from Otto and Edna Neely. The Gilbert Historical Society houses it headquarters in the building and on May 15, 1982, the building was reopened to the public as the Gilbert Historical Museum.
The building has been a town icon for over 90 years. It was built by Lescher & Kibbey in a 'mission/spanish revival' style. The building can be visited by the public as part of the museum. The museum features exhibits relating to Gilbert's history including a classroom to show the initial use of the building. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children 5-12, and under 5 is free.
