The Cenotaph, honouring those who served in the wars of WWI and WWII, Korea and S.E.Asia, is surrounded by wreaths and poppies on Anzac Day.
Crosses are also placed on the lawn opposite the New Plymouth Cenotaph on Queen Street each ANZAC day, 175 individual white wooden crosses of WWI and WWII dead, each with a name, rank and service number with awards. The crosses are held by New Plymouth RSA and placed in the garden adjoining the Cenotaph for Anzac Day each year.
Every Anzac Day thousands of people turn out for the New Plymouth dawn service to remember the sacrifice of the Anzacs. At daybreak they gather at the cenotaph to watch the parades and the laying of wreaths and poppies.
The stone Cenotaph was designed by Frank Messenger and unveiled on 17-Sep-1924. It has wreath and swords ornamentation.
