Cut bench mark on the west face of Leith Hill Tower, Coldharbour near Dorking, Surrey.
The tower was built by Richard Hull of Leith Hill Place in the 1765. Leith Hill is 965 feet high but Richard Hull wanted to exceed the 1000 feet mark. he did this by building the 60 feet high tower.
This is the highest point in souith east England with views to St. Paul's cathedral in London and the English Channel.
Richard Hull wass buried beneath the tower in 1772. It is said he was buried vertically, head downwards!
The turreted tower was not part of the original tower and was added one hundred years later.
