"Investigators are working to determine the cause of a weekend fire that gutted a Scappoose home around 5 p.m. on April 17.
"Firefighters from Scappoose Rural Fire District and Columbia River Fire and Rescue were called to 52463 Bird Road at 5:18 p.m. to battle the blaze. By the time the fire was extinguished at 6:46 p.m., the fire had destroyed the inside, leaving only the exterior walls standing.
"Occupant Bruce Nystevold had been sleeping in the front room when he awoke to find smoke coming from the back bedroom, said Ronda Melton, public information officer for the Scappoose Fire District. He immediately left the house and had a neighbor call 9-1-1.
"Thirteen fire personnel, two engines and four other support vehicles responded to the scene."
