The dam of Kadan is located on the Ohre river, in the western part of the town Kadan just below the Franciscan monastery. The middle part of the Ohre stream, from Karlovy Vary to Nechranice is one of the most beautiful river valleys in the Czech Republic - with many deep gorges, frequent rapids, rocks ans also lovely surrounting nature.
From the water management point of view, the Kadan reservoir significantly improves the retention effect of the Upper Ohre dams (Skalka and Jesenice), by allowing to regulate the necessary flow from the reservoir even under low water conditions. Under high water conditions, it is possible to pump the water using the pmping station of Rašovice and to lead it through the open artificial riverbed below the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) to the river basin of Bílina. For major part of the year, the area doesn't have enough water for local industry and especially for three local big coal power plants (Prunerov I, Prunerov II and Tušimice).
The Kadan dam was constructed from July 1966 to December 1972. The concrete dam is 104 m long, 18.4 m high and 5 m wide.
