This whimsical sculpture stands at the entrance to the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a commissioned work by whirligig artist Vollis Simpson of Lucama, North Carolina.

It was a blustery day when we came by the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The winds were blowing off Federal Hill and set this giant whirligig spinning and in full activity.
The Visionary Art Museum displays the works of self-taught artists without any formal art education. Many of the artistic pieces are constructed of cast off materials, what others might consider to be "junk".
In the case of this sculpture, commissioned for the opening of the museum, whirligig artist Vollis Simpson took various parts at hand and materials collected to create a 55-foot tall contraption of flying, whirling and spinning figures.
