Marker Name: A19 - A.M. Lara House
Marker Text: A.M. Lara came to Bend in 1907 from Minneapolis, purchased the Bend Mercantile Company and quickly established himself as a prominent merchant. He renamed the business for himself and regularly ran large advertisements in The Bend Bulletin, boasting the lowest prices around. Lara’s store also touted its “Rest Room” for lady shoppers, complete with fireplace, magazines and comfortable chairs. When Lara built his house in 1910, The Bend Bulletin estimated the price tag at $4,000.
