The plane is part of a memorial to the marines of the El Toro and Tustin air bases. The memorial was the idea of Santa Ana Police Capt. Dan McCoy. After years of fundraising, he raised $250,000 to pay for the memorial. Mr. McCoy passed away in 2002, and the memorial was unveiled in 2008.
The plaque reads: "To the honor, courange and commitment of all marines, especially those who served Marine Corps Air Stations El Toro and Tustin. "Semper Fidelis."
McDonnell Douglas A-4 "Skyhawk"
The A-4 Skyhawk first flew in 1954 and entered service with the Marine Coprs at MCAS El Toro in September, 1956. A total of 2,960 were built either as single seat attack aircraft or dual seated advanced trainers that were also used in forward air control missions. The A-4M model on display here first flew April, 1970. The A-4 Skyhawk played a major role during The Cold War and the Vietnam War providing close air support for marines while flying from expeditionary airfields and from aircraft carriers.
