Located in Walworth County, South Dakota, Java has a population of 169 as of July 2008. This reflects a 14% decrease from the 2000 census.
German, Russian, Norwegian, Irish, and Swedish peoples settled the area, and the town was incorporated on December 3, 1903.
Java is not located on any major highways and the closest town is Selby, about 15 miles to the west.
