Based on personal memmories from her childhood wrote Bozena Nemcova, popular Czech writter of 19th century, a book named "Grandma" which became her most popular and best love work and is regarded as a classic piece of Czech literature. The story is a fictionalised and idealised retelling of the author's childhood in north-eastern Bohemia in the 1820s and is centred on the character of Grandma (Babicka) - the simple, almost saintly Grandmother who comes to live with her daughter and grandchildren. Grandma (Babicka) is a repository of folk wisdom and kindness and accompanies her grandchildren, especially the eldest, Berunka, as they grow and learn about the life around them.
The book was so popular that in 1922 it was decided to erect the sculpture of Grandma with her grandchildren and dogs in the nice, pictoresque valley, where the storyline of the novel took place.
