From the Official Tourism site: "Since the end of August 1989 this giant with a height of 13.5 metres and a weight of 8 tons has been swinging his hammer in the steady rhythm of a man's breathing."
Hammering Man is a series of monumental kinetic sculptures designed by Jonathan Borofsky which have been installed in various cities around the world. The Basel copy is one of the larger ones. Other locations of Hammering Men in different sizes are: Seattle, Frankfurt, Seoul, New York City, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, La Jolla (California), Gainesville (Florida), Dallas.
The location is close to one of the major junctions in town. There are six streets crossing, four of them with tramway lines with individual stops, several bus stops, lots of pedestrians, no traffic lights. You can go there by car, but you won't have time to see the sculpture then.
