A geodetic survey mark beneath the trig on Mt Stewart, 19 km north-west of Palmerston North and 6 km south-east of Sanson. It was named after early surveyor John Tiffin Stewart, who chose the site for the station.

Geodetic Survey Marker Description:
Stainless Steel Pin 12 mm dia drilled into 25 mm iron rod set in a concrete plinth, 0.35 x 0.35 m by 0.49m high, engraved with a compass circle and the words 'Mt Stewart 1877'.

Mt Stewart: 135-m hill (also known as Whakaari) and trigonometrical station on State Highway 3, 19 km north-west of Palmerston North and 6 km south-east of Sanson. Mt Stewart was the initial station of the Wanganui Meridional Circuit and was named after early surveyor John Tiffin Stewart, who chose the site for the station and surveyed many of the towns, railways, roads and public works in the district.
