A small stone monument, located in park near to the Church of St. Lawrence, commemorates the invention and world's first industrial production of sugar cubes (1843) in town Dacice.
The granite monument in the shape of cube on prismatic pedestal was erected in 1983 (140 anniversary) and on small granite tablet located in it's front is inscription in Czech: První kostkový cukr na svete vyroben v Dacicích 1843, which means: "The world's first cubed sugar made in Dacice in 1843".
The first sugar cube was made in 1843 by Jakob Krystof Rad, director of local sugar refinery in Dacice. The story behind this invention is really interesting. Sugar was traditionally bought in loafs or cones and the method of refining and granulating sugar was not yet invented. The sugar needed to be cut off of the cone by a sharp knife, a hammer was also sometimes used. One day when Jakob's wife, Julianne was having coffee with some of her friends, she cut herself trying to break the sugar into smaller pieces. This night as she slept, she dreamed of a method of having individual pieces of sugar that could be used, eliminating the need of using a sharp knife...
Her dream was soon converted into real technology, patented by her husband Jakob in January 23, 1843. The industrial production started immediately and sugar cubes became soon popular in whole world...
