The Howard County Courthouse was constructed in 1887-1888. The courthouse was designed by architect W. F. Schrage and built by Sam B. Baker as contractor. The building is a brick and limestone Second Empire styled government building. It is the most prominent building in Fayette. The courthouse was restored in 1970.

Howard County established as the 9th county in the Missouri Territory on January 13, 1816 and was named for Benjamin Howard, first Missouri Territory governor. The county is nicknamed the "Mother of Counties" as from its original territory when founded 36 other counties or parts of counties in Missouri along with 10 Iowa counties or parts of counties were also part of Howard County.
