LAUNCH COMPLEX 39
JOHN F. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER
Men began the first journeys to the moon
from this complex. The succes of these explorations was
made possible by the united efforts of Government and
Industry and the support of the american people.
Twelve Saturn V-Apollo space vehicles were launched
from November 9, 1967 to December 7, 1972. Astronauts
Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins were
launched on the Apollo II Mission July 16, 1969 and achieved
the first landing on the Moon July 20, 1969.
This was also the launch site of the Skylar Program from
May 14, 1973 to November 16, 1973 during which three crews
of astraunauts occupied the first space station 171 days.
In recognition of these events, the complex appears in
the National Register of Historical places.
LC 39 Observation Gantry
The 60-foot-tall Launch Complex (LC) 39 Observation Gantry provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the two giant Shuttle Launch Pads, 39A and 39B. In addition to the bird’s-eye view of our launch pad structures, the panorama also includes the Launch Control Center, the well-traveled crawlerway and the massive Vehicle Assembly Building.
