Prior to 1908 the water boundary between the US and Canada were curved lines drawn on charts of the area - here it roughly followed the centre of the St Clair River. A more precise boundary was defined in 1908 by a series of straight lines connecting virtual turning points along the waterways. This plaque is placed next to one of the original land-based monuments (benchmarks) placed in 1911 to establish the location of these turning points along the St Clair river nearby.
