The Red Lion Inn is the most impressive building in Stockbridge, MA. It was establishe in 1773 and has been operated as an inn since.

Around 1773 Anna and Silas Bingham opened a general store in Stockbridge on the road connecting Boston and Albany.
In 1786, Stockbridge became the headquarters of the "Shays Rebellion".
In 1862, Charles H. Plumb and his wife Mert bought the Inn and began a ninety-year family management dynasty. In 1893 the Inn's operation was taken over by nephew Allen T. Treadway, aided by James H. Punderson, whose daughter Molly became the the third wife of Norman Rockwell.
on August 31, 1896 there was a fire that almost destroyed the hotel. It was restored and reopened April 30 1897.
In November 1968 the Inn was slated for destruction to make room for a gas station. It was rescued by John and Jane Fitzpatrick, the founders of Country Curtains.
On May 29,1969 The Red Lion Inn was opened for year-round business.
There are two lion statues at the front door of the Inn.
