Through the Iliad and the Odyssey epic poems, Homer provided great inside to early Greek life and thought. The gods were described greater men, with perfection in the virtues of strength, beauty, and wisdom.

The Homer statue was placed here in 1907 per a University of Virginia Alumni Bulletin as described in the Smithsoniam art inventory link given below. It is located on the University of Virginia campus at the south end of main lawn in front of Cabell Hall.
