Joseph Henry (
visit link) (1797 – 1878) was a scientist whose work in the development of the principles of electromagnetics led to the discovery of self-induction, and eventually to the creation of the telegraph, the telephone, and the DC motor.
The bronze statue, situated on a granite base, depicts a young Joseph Henry. The statue is located directly in front of the Old Academy Building (
visit link) in Academy Park, just across the street from the New York State Capitol building. The statue was created by artist John Flanagan in 1927.
The inscription on the granite below the statue reads:
