A large rock outcrop on the south side of South Mountain on the outskirts of Phoenix is home to several petroglyphs.

The valleys surrounding the South Mountains were home to the Hohokam, an ancient people who successfully farmed the Sonoran Desert for more than a thousand years. Scattered throughout the South Mountains are animal and geometric images that were pecked into stone outcrops and boulders at least 600 years ago. In this area are a few excellent examples of petroglyphs, including images of mountain sheep, other four-legged animals, snakes, lizards, circles, spirals, and human like figures. The meaning of this art is unknown although they may represent trail markings, a form of story telling, or records of events. The Pima Indians consider Hohokam rock art to have important spiritual significance.
To reach these petroglyphs, park in the lot at the trailhead at N33° 19.063 W112° 3.997 and make the approximate 3/4 mile uphill hike to a small group of rocks.
